Malaga participates in a European project to prevent citrus HLB

The Life Vida for Citrus project is led by Asaja Málaga and brings together a total of thirteen national and international entities

HLB (Huanglongbing), also known as ‘greening’, is a bacterial disease that affects the vascular system of the tree and causes the death of citrus fruits. Although, at the moment, the bacteria has not been detected in Andalusia, the same does not happen in other areas of Spain and Portugal.

The vector insect of the Trioza erytreae, propagator of the HLB has no treatment. It is therefore a plague that greatly worries the citrus sector in Malaga. The province is the first lemon producer in Andalusia, the Guadalhorce Valley being the area with the greatest implantation.

With a European scope, Life Vida For Citrus has the following participating partners: Asaja Málaga, AGRIMARBA 2 SL, Asaja Nacional, AVA Asaja, Seville City Council, the Center for International Cooperation in Agricultural Research for Development (France), the Canary Islands Institute for Agricultural Research, the Andalusian Institute for Agricultural Research and Training and Food and Ecological Production (IFAPA), the National Institute for Agronomic Research (France), the Valencian Institute for Agricultural Research, the University of Algarve (Portugal ), the Università degli Studi di Catania (Italy) and VALENCIAGRO. Over the next three and a half years, the partners will carry out the tasks defined in the project. All this without forgetting the issues related to its dissemination, the exchange of experiences and social participation.
